Questions worth asking before a neck lift

A consultation is a conversation you can steer. The questions that tend to be most useful, and the answers worth listening for.

Perspective from Stone Surgical Arts

People often leave a consultation realising they asked about cost and downtime and nothing else. A few questions consistently produce more useful answers.

A thought to keep

Ask what the procedure will not change. The answer tells you more than a list of what it will.

01

What is actually causing this?

Ask the surgeon to describe what they see: skin laxity, fat, muscle banding, jaw position, or a combination. The answer determines which procedure is appropriate and how much it can achieve.

If the explanation is only the name of an operation, ask again. The reasoning should come before the recommendation.

02

What will this not change?

Every procedure has boundaries. A neck lift does not change skin texture, sun damage or the position of the jaw bone, and it does not stop the tissues ageing further.

A surgeon willing to be specific about the limits is usually the one whose account of the benefits can be trusted.

03

What are the risks in my case?

General complication rates are less useful than what applies to you: your health, medications, smoking history and previous surgery all matter. Ask which risks are raised in your particular situation.

Ask what the plan is if something does not go as expected: how it would be managed, by whom, and at whose cost.

04

Is this the right time?

Recovery needs planning around work, family and any events you have in mind. A procedure booked shortly before a significant date rarely leaves enough room.

It is also fair to ask whether waiting would give a better result. Sometimes it would, and a surgeon who says so is worth listening to.
