Radiofrequency microneedling, and what it can reach

A treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. What it addresses, and the difference between tightening and lifting.

Perspective from Stone Surgical Arts

Radiofrequency microneedling delivers energy into the skin through fine needles, aiming to stimulate remodelling in the deeper layers. Morpheus8 is one of the devices in this category.

A thought to keep

Expect gradual improvement in skin quality and mild tightening. A device that treats skin does not reposition tissue.

01

How it works

Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin while radiofrequency energy is delivered at a set depth. The intention is to prompt the skin to remodel collagen as it heals.

Because the depth can be adjusted, treatment can be directed at the more superficial skin or somewhat deeper, which is what distinguishes it from microneedling alone.

02

What it is used for

It is generally used for skin texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, some acne scarring and mild laxity. Results build over a series of treatments and continue to develop for some months afterwards.

It is not a substitute for surgery. Where the concern is descended tissue or a surplus of skin, an energy device will not produce the change a lift produces, and claims to the contrary should be treated with caution.

03

What treatment involves

Topical anaesthetic is usually applied beforehand. Redness, swelling and a grid-like pattern on the skin are expected afterwards and typically settle within a few days.

A course of treatments spaced several weeks apart is usual, and results are gradual rather than immediate.

04

Suitability and safety

Skin type matters, as does a history of pigmentation changes, keloid scarring, active infection or recent isotretinoin use. These are the reasons for an assessment before booking a course.

Ask who will perform the treatment, what device settings are being used and why, and what the plan is if the skin reacts unexpectedly.
